I want my Echo.com
Hope this is a temporary situation (as I write, Echo's servers are down for "maintenance and an upgrade"). Though, as noted briefly before, Echo's offering could've done with a tweak (bravely turning up the serendipity; more visibly acting on those 'song request queues'), I was still enjoying it for a daily fix of radio-not-radio.
iPod shuffle feature is a pretty good substitute - I've finally discovered the point of shuffle (forgive me if everyone else has been gaining great satisfaction from shuffling the 10 tracks on an album all these years), or maybe shuffle has discovered the point of iPod. Once you've got 1200+ songs to shuffle with, surfing that random access is hugely enjoyable. Again, it approaches the serendipity and entertainment of good radio, but with a deep understanding of your own preferences (this time very closely, as you've populated the dataset yourself).
[but what what a nice holding page Echo has ... albeit with a twisted metaphor]
